(Getting healthy can be a challenge. Thankfully there are businesses in Golden, CO that take a comprehensive approach to wellness. Dr. Abby Bleistein of Healthful Life MD helps her clients live richer, fuller, and more active lives through medical weight loss. Her aim is to help her patients feel comfortable in their bodies, live healthy lifestyles, and feel good. In this week’s guest blog post, Dr. Bleistein explains how and why Healthful Life MD’s approach to weight loss leads to long-lasting results.)
“Aren’t there already lots of businesses like that out there? The Golden area is full of healthy people – will you have any clients?”
These are questions I encountered as I began Healthful Life MD in 2014. After all, what did I know about being self-employed? I had spent the past 14 years working as a board-certified MD in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Obesity Medicine. My appointments with patients were too brief to understand the unique situations they faced before they came through my doors. I wanted to help them with their weight loss beyond BMIs and blood pressure rates. It was a frustrating place to be for us both.
Becoming healthy from the inside out is not a simplistic formula to follow with equal parts calorie restriction and increased physical activity. If it were, we would all feel content with our bodies and living our lives to the fullest, and high blood pressure, diabetes and other obesity related health conditions would be rarities instead of epidemics.
Healthful Life MD focuses on healthy habits and changing your lifestyle. It’s not a diet or a plan, but a 360-degree multi-disciplinary approach to living a life with greater meaning and balance.
This journey to wellness unfolds much as it would if you were preparing to climb a 14’er. First, you meet with a trained guide to get the lay of the land and understand what you are facing.
At Healthful Life MD, you meet first with a medical doctor (that’s me) to assess your current physical state and understand how our team approach is designed for long-term success.
The next step is mental preparation. If you’re not mentally prepared to handle challenges, your journey to wellness will come to an abrupt end. How many people with negative thoughts on a loop are successful in what they set out to do?
Clients need to develop healthy habits in place of what they are doing now, especially those who use food to deal with emotions they are otherwise trying to squash. This behavior can manifest in emotional or compulsive eating, depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. To identify these challenges and arm us with coping skills, Healthful Life MD employs a psychologist and certified eating disorder specialist with more than 15 years of experience.
The next step in your journey is to understand what kind of fuel works best for you. Healthful Life MD employs a dietitian and a nutritionist. Why both? Our dietitian has more than 20 years of experience working in a clinical setting helping patients struggling with obesity, most recently at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She has many years of experience working side-by-side with physicians helping people optimize their diets to help improve their medical conditions. Our nutritionist specializes in functional nutrition, applying nutrition as medicine to help people improve their health and well-being through nutritional science. She is certified to help identify and manage celiac disease and gluten sensitivity as well.
Next you need to know how to prepare your meals. Healthful Life MD’s chef comes to your home for meal preparation and execution. Once you’ve gotten the lay of the land, are mentally prepared, have packed your rations and know how to cook them, it’s time to get moving.
Healthful Life MD’s personal trainer works to find the right exercises for your wellness journey. Our personal trainer takes injuries and preferences into account, and together, you’ll devise a training plan.
Each of Healthful Life’s six components is inextricably linked to each other and ignoring any one of them can leave you ill prepared to maintain any gains you make.
Our society stresses individualism and self-reliance and our weight loss approaches usually reflect this—just educate people about food and exercise on the polite end or shame them into feeling bad enough on the extreme end. What we know is that this myopic view does not work and often makes the situation worse. The factors that lead us to gain weight in the first place are complex, and they deserve solutions that are as multi-faceted as we are.
