Featured Golden, CO Business: Golden Poultry & Meats
Downtown Golden has a new butcher and market! We spoke with Jessica Bobitsky of Golden Poultry & Meats about their new location in the Foss Building on Washington Avenue.
Good To Be Golden: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and about your business?
Jessica Bobitsky: Golden Poultry & Meats is the second location for our company, Wheat Ridge Poultry & Meats. Wheat Ridge Poultry started in 1942 at the corner of 29th and Depew. We are the third family to own and operate Wheat Ridge Poultry. My husband and I purchased it from his uncle in December 2014. Our long term vision is to bring back the neighborhood market/butcher and help educate people on where their food comes from and how animal welfare and sustainability are our top priorities because they have a direct impact to our livelihood.
GTBG: Why did you choose Golden as the place to open your new location?
JB: It really happened out of pure luck. During the lockdown, my family ordered from a different restaurant every night to help support other local business owners. We had had our fill of delivery so we thought we would venture out to get curbside pickup, and as luck would have it, we ended up at Woody’s in Golden. After we placed our order, we had about 35 minutes to wait so we took a walk up and down Washington looking for any business we could go in and support. We found one open sign and made our way in to investigate. The sign belonged to Foss Company Wine since we didn’t need any wine, we turned to head out and saw the sign asking for experienced grocers. I reached out to Mr. Pat Foss who explained how much he wanted to bring back a neighborhood market to Downtown Golden. His vision was so clearly aligned with ours that it made perfect sense to open a new location in Golden.
GTBG: What was it like opening a new business in the middle of a pandemic?
JB: For all the bad things that can be said about COVID, the truth of the matter for us was that we saw a significant increase in business and were able to discover and grow relationships with local farmers, ranchers, and other family owned businesses. Because of our business model of working with as many local businesses as possible, we were able to keep our shelves fully stocked and even increase our product offerings.
I am very fortunate to lead a team that wants our company to grow and succeed as much as I do. As essential workers, each of us were working 15 hour days to ensure we could offer food to as many people as possible. We have also been very fortunate to have been able to partner with the Foss family and open a store in a city that was excited to have us and has made every step of the way as easy as possible considering that there is a pandemic going on.
GTBG: What is something you wish residents and visitors knew about your business?
JB: Our goal is to bring back the local neighborhood market. We want to build relationships with the community and offer product to our neighbors that meet their needs. We work with local farms and ranches to supply us with everything from eggs and butter to organic bison and elk. We offer online ordering for in-store pickup or home delivery as well as curbside pickup. Our online store offers all of the products we carry at Wheat Ridge Poultry but if you are looking for something specific, let us know, we most likely can place a special order for you and have it to you in a few days. We look forward to earning your business and hope to become a staple in Downtown Golden.
GTBG: Anything else you’d like to add?
JB: Don’t forget your Golden Poultry & Meats re-usable bags when you shop with us so you can save $0.10. Plus, each time you get a credit the Golden Civic Foundation will get $0.10 too!
